Interview Excerpt from 10/29/07
From a 20 minute interview. Name protected. This guy is a local. We'll call him "RL"
TBF: Pretty strange, isolated and a lonely place out here. What do you do out here?
RL: Protect..watch... the supply...the oil...check in and out the trucks and loading.
TBF: You're here all day and all night?
RL: [I have] 5 days on and have 5 days off. 24 hours a day. I sleep here...eat here. It's not bad.
TBF: You mean, you could be busy all day and all night?
RL: (Laugh) No...I'm here but most of the time there's not much to do...the trucks and grounds here.
TBF: This is in the middle of nowhere. Do you ever see illegals around here.
RL: All the time. Almost every day.
TBF: Really? Here?
RL: Especially here...all the time.
TBF: Are they in groups...by car...on foot?
RL: Usually on foot and in groups...five or more.
TBF: Walking?
RL: I think coyotes leave them off mostly. I guess some take the river. A lot [of them[ have maps.
TBF: Maps? You mean road maps?
RL: The look like official instructions....in Spanish...how to get across the border and where to go
TBF: What do you mean "official" instructions?
RL: Places to go...where to be safe and get water... a Mexican handbook.
TBF: You're kidding now, aren't you?
RL: No, they ask for directions and show me the maps....their handbooks. How to be safe.
TBF: You've seen "handbooks" from the Mexican government...on where to go and how to get around in our Country... as illegals?
RL: Si. They mostly want to know how far...and if the map is correct.
TBF: So what do you do?
RL: They want food and drinks...so I give them.
TBF: But since they're illegal...they shouldn't be here....do you report them?
RL: No. I don't....don't wanna be...I don't need problems.
TBF: Problems? What do you mean?
RL: If I reported... they'd still pass...the word would get out... I'd probably get tagged..
TBF: Tagged?
RL: You know....I could get hurt. And the coyotes...they can be dangerous.
TBF: Hurt? Physically?
RL. If you worked out here...you'd know...you know what I mean..
TBF: You're telling me illegals come by here almost everyday and you help them?
RL: I give them food and water because they ask for them. I don't have problems that way.
TBF: Why not call the Border Patrol?
RL: (Laugh)...they already know about them.
TBF: What do you mean?
RL: [The Border Patrol] they come by here all the time. They never do nothing...I never see them pick up anyone.
TBF: Illegals...and they don't do anything...they see them?
RL: They know this route. If they don't care... why should I start anything?
TBF: Well...how about....because illegal aliens...don't belong here....doesn't that matter to you?
RL: They come here.... that's a fact. If they get past the checkpoint, they're free.
TBF: Free?
RL : ID cards and [other] benefits up North. I don't see them getting picked up anywhere.
TBF: That doesn't bother you? You work hard for your money. You pay taxes.
RL: Yeah...it does. [long silence] ...They'd (my employer) probably fire me if I made a point of it. I don't want problems.
TBF: So all this goes on...and you don't see Border Patrol doing anything...picking up anybody?
RL: Yeah. Pretty much. I've never seen them pick anybody up. I know it happens sometimes...but I never see it.
TBF: What about the Border Fence. Do you think that would work?
RL: Yeah, It would help. If anything, it'd be a message. Maybe they'd think we're getting tough.
TBF: Why do you suppose there's so many people down here...in this area... are against the fence?
RL: We all know that....most people here are Latino. Like...it's a family thing. You know.
TBF: No...I don't believe I do understand. National Security, the spread of disease, crime, the money drain on our Country...and...
RL: I think we can handle it...I mean....we've been doing it a long time now
TBF: But it's a problem...you just said so. Why not do something to stop it?
RL: I don't think we can....but I guess it's worth a try. Maybe a fence would work. I don't know.
TBF Well I've got to admit...I'm a little surprised. A little amazed. But I do appreciate your honesty.
RL: It's just that...it's an issue to you...but not so much to me. I got too much to lose.
TBF: Well....I believe we've all got too much to lose....and we're definitely losing.
